The latest work from Studio 4°C, the geniuses that brought us the superb anime Mind Game and Tekkonkinkreet, ups the ante with a mind-bending omnibus overflowing with amazing imagery. First up Maeda Mahiro’s Gala delivers a fantastical symphony reminiscent of the dream worlds of Miyazaki Hayao. Nakazawa Kazuto packs the hyperactive Moondrive with wry sight gags and a frantic energy that seems to burst from the screen, following the inept exploits of a gang of treasure hunters. The freeform animation of Ohira Shinya’s “Wanwa” the Doggy illustrates the fevered imagination of a young boy, full of toys, candy, cute puppies, but also a menacing ogre. Tanaka Tatsuyuki’s Toujin Kit presents a paranoid dystopian world in which secret police hunt the creators of strange inter-dimensional beings. Finally Studio 4°C co-founder Morimoto Koji contributes the intense mood piece Dimension Bomb, which, true to its title, explodes into a mass of otherworldly visions. — Michael McDonnell
