ANOTHER TITLE
Renowned Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas’ whirlwind career has encompassed filmmaking, journalism, urbanist theory and an array of unique buildings across the globe, so the challenge for this film is finding a form that can contain its subject’s profligate energy. Its response is a hyperactive, information-rich approach that will use any means to illustrate the wild ideas: archival footage, animated diagrams, pixilated collages. It’s an efficient and immersive way of organising diverse material, and before long we’ve covered Koolhaas’ background, interests, design philosophy and workplace dynamics. He’s even explained why it’s so important to understand the context around his aphorism ‘Fuck context.’ The film then relaxes a little to present in-depth explorations of Koolhaas’ signature commissions, including Prada’s epicenter stores and the Casa da Música in Porto. The climax comes with his first skyscraper, the amazing “loop in space” of the CCTV Building in Beijing. — Andrew Langridge
